There’s no doubt that the Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition is the king of the hill. Most results position the GTX 1080 at the top or very near the top, synthetic or real world tests. It’s a reference design so the cooler performance isn’t up to the custom PCB cards that are coming on to the market now, but that’s the usual outcome of a new Nvidia or AMD GPU launch. The drivers confused the issue as well, the release driver wasn’t unified, we need to use the older driver release when testing the GTX900 series of cards, something that has now been resolved.

We also had the unusual cooling fan performance, and we tested with that driver, so we got the annoying sound performance first hand for a couple of days. We want to say this is now resolved, but the newer driver which has a much improved cooling fan profile is pretty much getting slated around the web for poor performance.

Most of the hype around this release was created by Nvidia, the rest was the confirmation that this card is a performance beast, through and through. Yip, Nvidia may have dropped the ball a little with the release drivers, and the subsequent drivers that game to fix the issues, but there’s no doubt, the Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition is a stellar performance, and the VGA GTX 1080 Founders Edition exercises the GPU core perfectly.
