Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Edition Graphics Card Review

Finally, Batman: Arkham Origins in the glorious UHD resolution, the game that looks like an AMD FPS fest’.  If you want the best FPS money can buy, it looks like you need an AMD GPU to run Arkham Origins at UHD resolution without fear of low FPS. That said, the AMD GPU’s do drop down a lot and have the worst minimum FPS of all the cards. Still, even though the Nvidia GPU’s are solid, they just can’t reach the FPS performance of the AMD cards.

How does the Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Edition perform? It’s out performed by the XFX R9 390X DD and that card, while superb, is in a lower class of card, and that shouldn’t happen.

Conclusion

Our conclusion is in the context of one thing, flagship non-reference GPU’s. This is an excellent performer, and we think the GTX980 Ti core is the best money can buy, but only just. AMD’s cards are superb and in certain situations they are class leading. So why would you spend money on the Zotac GTX 980 Ti AMP! Edition over the reference edition? Well, we don’t think you would, other than for looks and one point, overclocking.

Consideration

Our biggest issue with this card is that it’s not special enough. Sure a core and memory frequency increase are good as standard and the GTX 980 Ti core is excellent, but we think the only advantage in owning this card over the reference design is cooling, and therefore overclocking. You may get a good overclocking baseline out of this card due to the good cooling solution, and it will help with sound performance, but the Palit Super Jetstream GTX 980 Ti outperforms it on most tests.

To add insult to injury, there are two other cards in the GTX 980 AMP! range, probably meaning the “stock” AMP! Edition is a little under “Amped” to make a difference against the reference cards. With the GTX 980 Ti performance and the good cooling solution, we still think it’s worth consideration.
