Lexar Portable SSD 512GB Storage Review

Test Setup

All synthetic tests are carried out three times with the best result taken. We used the various software’s own test count settings, so for example CrystalMarkx64 we ran the test count at nine, but repeated this three times.

We use several synthetic benchmarking tools, they are a synthetic reference and can have several factors either included in the test or impacting the test. This is why we use a static and standard test system. All firmware, BIOS, drivers and patches are updated as of the date of this review. We have also kept the PCMark tests up to date including a re-run of the storage benchmarks after the recent updates.

Results

CrystalMarkx64 Sequential Read results first and there is an obvious winner, the Samsung SM951 512GB M.2, but we are not going to be looking at that. We have included a selection of drives for comparison, if you want to exclude any drives, click on the legend for the particular drive and it will remove itself from the chart, click again to add it back in.

The little Lexar Portable SSD performs well and is faster in all three tests than the Lexar Professional Workflow DD512. The DD512, as with all the drives in this review were retested, so the increase is not due to driver or OS performance enhancements. The increase in minimal, but who wouldn’t take a performance increase?

The Lexar Portable SSD is a fast drive, and it is small and compact enough to fit in your pocket. At 62 grams, without the cable, it's also not going to cause a lot of backpack or suitcase issues. There are plenty of portable SSD's out here, and unless you are transporting a sizable back up, you need to consider an SSD external drive, and this is where the Lexar Portable SSD comes good. It's fast enough to be impressive and it's cheap enough to be affordable.
