The GPU manages to keep to the same physical size of general graphics card by utilising the fabrication size of 16nm and the transistors also have fins (FinFET).

EVGA’s unique packaging is a bit of an eye opener, it;s certainly lightweight and doesn’t feel like it will provide much protection during transit. With that said, the sample arrived in perfect condition.

As a lot of websites have already said, it is a bit “Lamborghini Aventador” in looks, but nobody is complaining. The card is in Nvidia’s usual colour scheme with a plastic cover over the heatsink and the equally usual leaf blower looking cooling fan.

We tested the card with the release driver 368.25 which had a distinctive cooling fan profile. It reminded us of a blustery wind when it surged and it was pretty annoying. These drivers also were not entirely unified, they did no recognise other Geforce graphics cards, only the GTX 1080.

We tested the sound profile with driver version 368.39, the drivers with the expected fix for the cooling fan profile, we’ll see if it is resolved in the sound performance results later. There is also a question around SLi with the early drivers and what games are supported. All round, not a very complete release driver. We luckily missed the performance issues that people are having with the 368.39 drivers, use with caution.

Nvidia may have dropped the ball a little with the release drivers, and the subsequent drivers that game to fix the issues, but there's no doubt, the Nvidia GTX 1080 Founders Edition is a stellar performance, and the VGA GTX 1080 Founders Edition exercises the GPU core perfectly.
