Introduction

Lexar, now owned by Crucial Technology, have been around the Personal Computers for nearly 20 years now, from a time when they probably were truly personal. They should know a thing or two about PC users, their needs, wants and desires. Fast, small and large capacity external drives is certainly one of them and Lexar have a range of storage options. Today we review the Lexar Professional Workflow DD512, aimed at the professional who uses and moves large files either on the go, or just around the office, that’s all of us then!

The Lexar Professional Workflow line of products includes your choice of two four-bay reader and storage drive hubs, a selection of card readers, and two storage drives. Product Shots

The packaging is fine, though not the usual “Gaming” or “Ultimate” kind of thing we are used too. Aimed at the professional it probably doesn’t need much more. It doesn’t have a power cable, which we are thankful of, all powered by USB 3.0, so less to carry around or lose.

The Lexar Professional Workflow DD512 is very small, measuring 2.5 inches deep, 3 inches wide and only 1 inch tall. It will hide behind some 3.5 inch floppy disks! Round the back, one USB port, nothing else. Next, test setup and results.

What makes the DD512 work is its speed, nothing will transfer large files in an office as fast as this. When you think about it, it makes perfect sense, we just hadn't thought about using devices like this any more, but SSDs really make portable fast devices work, and the DD512 does it really well. For around the same price you will get a 2Tb external HDD but you won't get the speed. You will get heat, some moving parts and more than one cable, it already feels like a step backwards.
