We reviewed the Phanteks PH-TC12LS CPU Cooler and liked it. It has some good qualities at a good price and will give the owners of small form factor systems another good option for cooling their CPUs. We also received the Phanteks PH-TC14S CPU Cooler at the same time and have reviewed them pretty much back to back.

Phanteks are probably more known for their PC chassis than for anything else, including their coolers. Phanteks have an extensive range of chassis and accessories for their chassis including a range of fans. The Phanteks Evolv is probably one of the most recognised chassis out there, and still gets a lot of coverage. If you look at the Phanteks site, they do have a range of CPU coolers, enough of them to get any system builder going.

We welcome back Scythe to the Hardwareslave office with the Grand Kama Cross 3, a cooler with a bit of a difference to it. We haven’t tested a Scythe product since the Scythe Mugen MAX CPU cooler review last year and we gave that a good score, 4.4 out of 5 to be exact. So we were happy to get another one on the test bench and give it a good going over.

Asus are calling this their “Flagship micro-ATX Z170 with 5X Protection II for dependable stability, fantastic DDR4 performance, and reversible USB Type-C connectivity”. It’s a rather odd claim for this motherboard, Asus have flagship product lines, the Rampage and ROG series for example. Why would they call Z170M Plus motherboard a flagship?

Memory, it’s often the most generic part of your system, along with a PSU. Not that all system builders would go for any old RAM, but it can be intangible performance for the cost, especially for DDR4 modules these days. Anyone bought an Intel Z97 motherboard recently? We think it is one of the best Chipsets out there but Intel think it’s time for an upgrade. They recently launched their Skylake range of CPU’s and a supporting Chipset, the Z170. We have a couple of motherboard and CPU samples kicking around the office and we must admit we are already very interested in their capabilities and performance.We love mITX motherboards these days, and though still a compromise on what you can populate them with, there has been a step change from a couple of years ago, making a mini gaming rig possible and a performer too.

Another Z97 Chipset motherboard is on the bench, and it’s another Gigabyte. The Z97 Chipset by Intel is probably the mainstay of most mainstream, desktop and gamers on a wide ranging budget. It was more a case of evolution than revolution over the Z87, refinement over sweeping changes.

We are big fans of mITX motherboards, though only in recent years. They have come a long way from their beige roots and now will tickle the geekiness of many gamers around the world. We recently review the Crucial Ballistix Sport DDR4 2400Mhz Memory and it scored an excellent 4.6 out of 5.0. DDR4 is still new and still exclusive to X99 Chip sets at the time of writing, so though it’s an excellent memory kit, big gains can be main when a technology is learning to walk through its initial phases of development.
